This Thursday, Dr. Mohamed Abdelghani, a renowned British psychiatrist, is meeting with a medical team from the TMS Wellness Center at the Cantos Hospital. His presence in the facility is part of the training of the staff called to manipulate a device of transcranial magnetic stimulation, TMS.
The device, which the Ministry of Health is using, acquired in 2023 at the cost of 17 million rupees, is a first for Mauritius. Transcranial magnetic stimulation consists of generating electromagnetic fields on a part of a patient’s head, and these stimulations activate or inhibit specific areas of the brain. If someone suffers from depression, some areas of there brain are less active and must be stimulated with this device. This without medication, without sedatives or anesthesia.
Dr. Abdelghani is an expert in the field of TMS. He is the one who introduced the first TMS clinic in the public health sector in Great Britain. He was also the president of the Clinical TMS Society for the period 2022-2023.
Dr. Abdelghani wanted to share his knowledge with a medical team in Mauritius.
My colleague and I received two weeks of training in India, in Bangalore. Dr. Abdelghani told us about TMS and showed us a new protocol that we could use for a new patient in Mauritius.
The cutting-edge technology in the public health system will undoubtedly improve the care and services offered to Mauritians. Note that the official launch of this device is scheduled for August.
